Xela Spanish Class (day 1)

I slept alright on the plywood, Amie couldn’t say the same. Diarrhea is crippling us. The cold showers are making it miserable. Putting on a happy face, we rolled out of bed to face breakfast (we have no idea what we're going to get, and based on what we have seen in Guate we aren't expecting much, in fact, are a bit nervous).

I was pleasantly surprised to find a good, healthy, variety. There was some sort of interesting porridge, fried plantains, eggs with peppers and onions, corn muffins, coffee, tea, etc. Its difficult to understand ‘Berta and Christina, so we smile a lot and give the ol’ thumbs up.

At school we met our teachers and dove right in. Since this is a Spanish emersion course, no English is allowed. For $150/week we get our room and board and 5 hours a day for 5 days, one on one with a certified Spanish teacher.

5 hours of Spanish is plenty. We were ready for a break and decide to head back to our favorite café. Before we did, we stopped at our room to drop our homework and things and see what was cooking for lunch. Christina had ready some delicious fried mash potatoes (with eggs) and the most delicious refried beans (more like mashed black beans). Mmmmm…. After what we’ve been eating our expectations are low.

Dinner was uneventful, Christina wanted to rush of to a party. We ended up eating what they had here and headed to the local Italian place, Giuseppe’s, for a cheese pizza. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. The highlight for me was the rockin sound track: 1980’s US rock. Eye of the tiger, Give me the night, etc.

We turned in around 7pm, did as much of our homework as we could stand and after a cold shower, laid out on our plank of plywood cursing the fact we dumped our thermarests just days before.

Hasta manana….
