Puerto Escondido to Tuxtla Gutierrez, 355 miles

We almost made our goal of San Cristobal today, but had to stop just shy. About 30minutes before Tuxtla Gz amie wasn’t doing so well. I’m guessing she suffered heat exhaustion. We pulled into the first hotel we found to cool her down and get her some rest. A couple hours relaxing in AC, and shes all better.

We left at dawn, adam was ready and waiting, and we were on the road again. Lucky for us, our prayers to the road-gods were answered. Good pavement, sunny blue skies, and only a handful of Topes. There is no way we could have made so many miles otherwise.

We are cruising at about 70mph on two lane road most of the morning, then crossed out of Oaxaca state into Chiapas. The bike was handling much better after dropping the 20lbs+. We will miss the thermarests…. Sending them home just didn’t make sense.

While looking for a place to eat lunch we lost adam again. Hopefully he made it to S. Cristobal and we’ll catch him in town tomorrow.

I’m trying to talk amie into going to Palenque Mayan ruins tomorrow or the next day, but she’s not to keen on the jungle setting and mosquito situation. They are supposed to be some of the best ruins and we are very close. I would hate to miss that opportunity.

Haven’t really be thinking about XP, or what I’m going to do for work when I get back. I’m very involved constantly with the state of the motorcycle, the route, the destinations, and navigating the pot holes, donkeys and topes. By about 8pm I’m completely drained. I’m really looking forward to the Spanish classes and 1 week in the same place!

Here in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capitol of Chiapas, we have had a surprisingly good time. It’s a city of 500k people, very modern, and appears to be pretty affluent with a university, crowne plaza hotel, etc. No real tourist attraction, just a medium sized Mexican town we happened to stop in by chance… but its neat here—a side of mexico we haven’t seen before (I don’t think many gringos do). After amie felt better, we hit the town, got a churro relleno (like a chile relleno but with a sweet filling, it was nasty), enjoyed some live music in the square, and some tasty, cheap tacos, quesadillas and Modelo.

Amie’s sawing logs by 9pm. I’m reading up on Guatemala, and about 100pages in on Don Quixote.

Life is good…
