Mulege to Bahia Concepcion, 56 miles
We didn’t ride far today as Mike wanted to take in and enjoy what Baja truly is; the nice beaches. The area where all the really nice little spots are is Bahia Conception which is a little hook off the Gulf side of Baja. We passed through some great scenery with little coves and beaches, crystal clear blue water and plenty of Palapas. We ended up staying at a little motel off one of the beaches which looked just like the Corona commercials you see on TV. White shell sand, still crystal blue waters and a Palapa; beautiful. It wasn’t much of a ride until we got here, but after dumping our stuff in our room we were able to explore the beach and nearby beaches.
Our ‘adventuring’ turned quite sour today with two big scares. As Mike was attempting to reach one of the restaurants in the cove, he drove through some mud/water (from the recent and not be hurt. I think Mike learned to be more cautious and I’m just happy we were okay. A quick rinse in the ocean cleaned us right up. The second scare really freaked me out. As we were riding back to our little nook of a restaurant where we had our fall (delicious fish tacos for only $3/3 tacos) Mike got stung. He pulled over, I looked, and sure enough there was a stinger stuck in him. I got really freaked out as I know stinger usually means some type of bee, whether he’s allergic or not, I wanted to be prepared. Fortunately we hadn’t ridden far so I instructed him to turn around. He felt fine and started to argue that he was okay to ride BACK to the restaurant only to find himself starting to swell and break out in hives/rash. I’ve been with him when he’s been stung before, but I’ve never seen his body react as bad as it did; he looked terrible. Words can’t truly describe how scared I was. Where are we, how to I speak to the hotel keeping in enough Spanish for her to understand we need help if need be and HOW do I know WHEN to Benedryl. He wasn’t feeling well and by the second I could see him swelling more and more; his face completely puffed out. All I could think of is THIS IS WORSE THAN I’VE EVER SEEN… After running the scenarios through my head I decided that calling for help to come would be best; as in a situation like this it’s better to be safe than sorry. I figured on Mexico time if I call BEFORE I need help, then hopefully help will be with us SOON after we do need help. I kept the epi-pen in my hand ready to use it, continuously reading the 3 step directions. I have to admit I felt a bit disoriented and stupid as I didn’t speak a lick of Spanish and the easy 3 step directions seemed too hard for me to grasp. I rely on Mike to speak Spanish, to read directions, to tell me what is needed…and all of a sudden I didn’t have him and he greatly relied on me; so scary. After playing charades with the Hotel Senora I got her dialing for help, Keith on guard in Mike’ get help… I got him a couple of the prednzone pills and as quickly as possible a couple of hurricane/storm) which caused us to take a big spill in a huge pile of sticky mud; not fun. I was mad, he felt bad and we were drenched in mud. In hindsight we were just lucky to take a spills room and me running back and forth between. I didn’t want to regret anything and more than anything in the entire world I wanted him better and to be okay. It was scary the feelings that crossed my mind; nothing matter but to make him safe and keep him away from any dangers.
A ex fireman was able to run over from a cabana nearby and calmed my nerves that he will be okay. At that point he was looking a LITTLE better and we were able to call of the medical help.
He is better now, he still has some terrible rashes all over his body, but fortunately the face swelling is better and he can breathe just fine; my biggest concern. He is lying in bed now sleeping; I just hope he wakes up in the morning feeling better. What a day.
